"Bringing" Myself to Do It

In fact this is another of my "secret weapons". I've learned something important about myself over the years, and you may find that the same thing applies to you. Here it is:

I will procrastinate and avoid working on a project if it seems to be too difficult, time consuming, complex, or intimidating.

Interestingly, if I trick myself into believing that I'm only going to work on it for 30 minutes or so, I ALWAYS feel motivated to continue beyond the initial 30 minutes and accomplish much more than I planned. It's my own perception that something will take a lot of time or be extremely difficult that gives me pause.

Give this idea some thought and you might discover that you do the same thing, and we are not alone in that habit. The start is the hardest part for many people, so beginning with a very small commitment is a good way to get over that hump. Then you can gradually push yourself to put in longer periods of time.

The important thing is to simply get moving on a regular basis. You'd be amazed at what you can accomplish in even small bursts of activity.

Now for the big question: how do you juggle your priorities? Sometimes it can seem like there simply aren't enough hours in the day to accomplish everything we want to do. I won't kid you; you will need to be creative about making your focus a priority. Beyond simply "making time" to work on your goals, you will need to make some crucial decisions on a moment-to-moment basis.

You might be tempted by a great television program, an invitation to go out with friends, a spouse that demands some quality time, and more. You will NOT need to neglect the other areas of your life to keep a strong focus. In fact, doing so is usually a very bad idea.

Instead, think about the non-essential activities you do on a daily or weekly basis, and decide which of them can be lessened or eliminated to allow more time for staying focused on your goals. We all have non-essential activities, whether it's 10 hours of television-watching, aimlessly surfing the Internet after dinner, or golfing on Saturday afternoons.

While it's not healthy to eliminate ALL of your hobbies and recreational activities, you can certainly learn to balance them with your other priorities.

I won't launch into a big explanation on this because you are smart enough to know that if you waste a lot of time on unimportant things and don't allot enough time to work on your goals, your progress will be less than impressive. It's just common sense.

If you want to make your objectives a priority, you've got to set aside time to focus intently on them, period.

You Cannot Quit

Regardless of any challenges, YOU CANNOT QUIT. No matter how difficult it seems to keep going, you MUST be willing to persevere if you want to make it. Remember this: quitting means certain death for your goals; quitting means defeat, disappointment and despondency.

Don't kid yourself into believing that you can quit "for a little while," or "until it gets easier," or "until I feel stronger." If you do this, you will effectively be starting from scratch again. If you can accept that, then go for it. But if your dreams and goals are vitally important to you, and you are absolutely determined to hone your focus until it is razor sharp - you can't stop.

Make a commitment to yourself that you will keep going, no matter what. Even if you believe you only have the strength to devote a few minutes each day to sharpening your focus and making progress on your goals, STICK to those few minutes like glue. Just don't stop.

Draw up a contract with yourself that details this agreement. Sign it. Stick copies of it all over the walls, on the bathroom mirror, in your journal, in your wallet - wherever you'll see it most often.

Tenacity also refers to your self-assurance, did you know that? One definition of tenacity is "not easily pulled apart." Pull yourself together and stay pulled-together - mentally, emotionally, spiritually and physically. Believe in yourself and your ability to succeed at whatever you do. Build a strong focus and KEEP a strong focus. Apply it well and apply it often.

If you can do this consistently, then the success you seek will surely be yours.

Hearing Aids Review: The 4 Leading Brands

Are you looking for a hearing aid but don't know where to start? Here is the definitive guide to the leading brands of hearing aids. I will review some of the top names in hearing aids including Siemens hearing aids, Beltone hearing aids, Starkey hearing aids and Phonak hearing aids.

Hearing aids are available in analog or digital models. Analog hearing aids have been on the market for years. These are less expensive than digital hearing aids but do not provide the sound quality and features that digital hearing aids do. Digital hearing aids offer a cleaner sound quality than analog models and can be programmed by computer to achieve a high level of adjustment. Digital hearing prices have fallen, hence, more people can afford them.

There are several types of hearing aids on the market. A hearing aid specialist can help you choose the type that suits you best. The closer the hearing aid sits to the eardrum the better the sound will be.

Here are 4 types of hearing aids:

BTE: Behind the Ear

This type fits over the ear and rests behind it. It is typically the least expensive.

ITE: In the Ear

This is the most common type that sits in the ear

ITC: In the Ear Canal

This type fits slightly lower into the ear and is not very noticeable.

CIC: Completely In the Ear Canal

This fits down into the ear canal, requires the most fitting and is the least visible to others.

There are 4 leading manufacturers of hearing aids that have proven to provide superior products. They provide the ultimate in customer service to ensure improved hearing and customer satisfaction.

Siemens hearing aids

All Siemens hearing aids come with a two-year warranty. The higher priced Siemens hearing aids have more channels and offer more features than the lower priced versions. Social Responsibility & The Corporate Values Statement

Corporate Values reflect a company's culture. The values make that the culture is to be communicated which is a difficult task. To understand a suitable value statement for a company, one should understand what culture is and whether the statement really represents the culture of the company.

Simply said: culture is what a group of people have in common, for example facing similar questions and problems because they operate in a similar business. This is the internal element of culture, the other one is external oriented: in what environment does this group of people operate and how does this affect them. How do they interact with the environment?

Social responsibility is obviously a value that is focused on this second element: the interaction of the group (corporation) with its environment.

How it could work: a social responsible company charges more for their products and uses some of the profit margin for social projects...

A first question to ask about corporate values is whether a value should be used as such, like: "entrepreneurial," "client focused" and also this one "social responsibility" are values that you'd better not use in the corporate values statement. The reason is that they are too vague.

Yet they appear in value statements:

Social Responsibility. We are committed to a culture of being friendly to the environment meeting a high corporate citizenship standard, protecting the health and safety of our employees and impact positively on the communities where we operate... A strong sense of social responsibility... etc.

So what does this mean?

A company like Siemens, a conglomerate of which social responsibility could really be an issue, is investing in Africa in projects to make energy available for the development of small villages. The idea is that energy in Africa is one of the main problems that withholds development and Siemens could play a role there.

Sure.

But does Siemens add the social responsibility to their set of values? No: Siemens' corporate values are: "responsible, excellence and innovative." Once you have defined "responsible," social responsibility is managed automatically, but not as a corporate value, it is not a value that is shared amongst the employees.

Another reason not to use social responsibility is that it is not a value that can be translated to individual behavior. Imagine that two people meet each other on a holiday and they find out to work both for Siemens: would you think they feel related because of Siemens' Social responsible role in energy projects in Africa? That is too far away and not (emotionally) connecting people and therefore not a cultural element.

Besides this view there is another view on social responsibility and that is the value of long term relations with the (social) environment versus short term business success. Social responsibility is another way of making sure a company does not only focus on the short-term benefits of stakeholders.

Another example is Microsoft and the Gates foundation. This is another view on social responsibility: a clear separation of business (Microsoft) and a responsible role in the global society (Gates Foundation).

One reason to keep these areas separated is that with the concept of social responsibility one enters the arena of politics. On the internet I found this statement: "Responsible business leaders know that business cannot succeed if society fails..." but still, call this a business opportunity and a marketing issue rather than a social responsibility.

Let's take another example: Google's social responsibility. For example Google could be held responsible for the increasing junk on the internet. In addition to every time indexing more pages it could operate as a police-officer so that surfers do not litter.

Take Google's Answers for instance and the following posting:

I am looking for an English translation of Pablo Neruda's poem "Muere lentamente". Thanks (1)

Today a newspaper published an article about this poem that was assumed to be of the Chilean Poet. But in fact the real author is the Brazilian Martha Medeiros.

Now who is responsible for this (mistake) and that 10,000 surfers continue to believe in a mistake?

I would argue that Google is. It offers the main gateway to the web and therefore the main party that makes distribution of errors like these possible. It obviously conflicts with Google's neutral approach of "don't be evil." But for how long can thy remain neutral? I think that Google can be compared with the British Petroleum of the internet. BP has reinvented itself by Beyond Petroleum. Google has introduced a new four-colored icon. The step to a more social responsible role is underway I guess.

Regarding corporate values statements ... I would leave "social responsibility" out.

Siemens Centra

Siemens Acuris

Siemens Acuris s bte

Siemens Centra hearing aids are designed to provide you with the most natural and comfortable hearing experience. They utilize ear-to-ear technology and can help you determine from which direction a sound is coming from. They are designed to automatically adjust to your preferred volume.

Many people need to wear hearing aids in both ears. One of the main problems is having both hearing aids adjusted to where you are receiving the same sound from both units. The Siemens Acuris hearing aids overcome this problem with ear-to-ear wireless technology. What this means is that both hearing aids work together as one system. All the sounds that you hear are synchronized and one control will adjust both devices at the same time. It is even designed with an e-pocket remote control for easy discreet adjustments. Siemens Cielo hearing aids are designed with an "adaptive directional microphone system". This feature enables you understand what a person is saying, even when you are in places with a lot of background noise. They come with other features such as alert tones, wind noise reduction and autophone.

Siemens Cielo Life hearing aid has no visible controls so others will not notice when you are working the controls. This is a great benefit that helps the wearer to be more discreet when using the hearing aid in public. Siemens Cielo Life hearing aids come with digital noise reduction, alert tones, comfortable soft like tip, no ear hook and natural color designs.

Siemens Triano has the Speech Comfort System that adjusts the hearing aid to different sound environments. This system provides listening comfort, thus reducing the effort and strain normally related to wearing a hearing aid.

There are other reputable manufacturers of hearing aids such as Phonak, Beltone, Widex and Starkey. It is good to shop around in order to find the hearing aid that suits your hearing needs, comfort, lifestyle and budget.

Fujitsu Siemens Pocket LOOX N520

Fujitsu Siemens has quietly introduced a new addition to the Pocket LOOX range of PDAs. The N series of PDAs has seen its innovative Pocket LOOX PDA range expand in functionality with the addition of an integrated GPS receiver. One of the first things we noticed as we unpacked this PDA was its small size and more specifically, its narrow width. It is actually hard to imagine that Fujitsu Siemens managed to pack everything it did, including GPS, into this small form factor. Another feature we loved was the fact that the GPS antenna is built into the body, so there is no need to unfold a bulky aerial. Looking at the technical specifications of the N520, it features a 312MHz Intel XScale processor with a 128MB ROM and 64MB or RAM, all of which runs on Windows Mobile 5.

Just below the 3.5-inch LCD are most of the common PDA buttons you will find on such a device, including a special GPS button that will launch your GPS software. Compared to the other devices in this roundup, we were a little disappointed with the bundle that ships with this device. It only features an AC adapter, USB sync cable and pouch. We would have liked to see the addition of a car charger too. As seems to be the trend with PDA/GPS hybrids, the Pocket LOOX doesn't ship with GPS software. Instead, you can purchase an optional software kit that contains a car cradle (car charger not included) and the City Navigator 4 software on a 128MB SD Card. While the software worked fine, we much preferred the HandyMap software, which is also available as a separate purchase. The Pocket LOOX N520 performed impressively under our test conditions, but was a little slow at times.

Review Of Hearing Aids - Siemens, Beltone, Phonak & Starkey

Hearing aids are available in analog or digital version. Analog hearing aids have been on the market for quite some time and are the least expensive type of hearing aids. Today, most hearing aids are digital as these provide better amplification, cleaner sound quality and can be programmed by computer. They are becoming more affordable as their prices have fallen.

There are 4 styles of hearing aids on the market. A hearing professional can help you determine the style that suits you best. The inexpensive behind-the-ear (BTE) hearing aid is fitted over the ear and rests behind it. A hearing aid that can sit just inside the ear is the in-the-ear (ITE). The in-the-canal (ITC) hearing aid fits slightly lower into the ear, so it is almost invisible. Lastly, the completely-in-the-ear-canal (CIC) hearing aid is fitted down the ear canal.

Biography of a CEO - Peter Loescher

Peter Loescher became president en CEO of Siemens in 2007. His background in healthcare must have been one of the elements that Siemens was looking for. Healthcare is one of the three main sectors of Siemens' focus (next to energy and industry).

The official Curriculum of Loescher starts with the fact that he was born in 1957 in Austria. "He studied at the Vienna University and the Chinese University of Hong Kong (not mentioned what subject) achieved an MBA in Vienna University and an "AMP" from Harvard Business School (1).

His first job (at an age of 31) in 1988 was as a (senior) Management Consultant (1).

From then he entered the healthcare / pharmaceutical sector starting as a managing (director) at Hoechst Roussel Veterinaria in Spain to become later President and CEO of Hoechst Marion Roussel, in Japan (in 2000).

He continued in the pharmaceutical sector as the chairman, President and CEO of Aventis Pharma Ltd. in Japan in 2002. Than, president of Amersham Health, Chief Operating Officer and member of the Board of Directors in 2004. The company Amersham was acquired by GE (healthcare) of which Loescher becomes President and CEO (of GE Healthcare Bio-Sciences).

His latest position before joining Siemens was at Merck & Co. Inc. (President of Global Human Health until July 2007).

Some of the main characteristics in this curriculum are:

- main experience in a single business sector: healthcare / pharmaceutical. Which shows the importance of specific knowledge.
- international experience (studies abroad, management experience in Europe, Japan, etc)
- (therefore) experience with different cultures
- predominantly experience with large (blue chip) corporations
- extensive study before entering the market (at an age of 31).

An outsider.
"Scandal-battered Siemens has turned to an outsider in its search for a new chief executive, naming a top U.S. healthcare industry executive as its new leader on Sunday." (2)

"The company has been very self-contained. Loescher will need to build a powerbase for himself and then ensure his acceptance." (2)

Siemens preferred an external candidate "to ensure a new chief executive would not be drawn into ongoing investigations into bribery allegations." Currently these allegations have been processed to a claim of 800 million dollar.

"I am convinced that Mr. Loescher has what it takes to steer Siemens through its current difficulties and into a better future."
Apparently the step to Siemens is seen in the market as a career move. But with a dual benefit; siemens was looking for an outsider and Loescher a next step on the career ladder. Siemens is one of the few global "trains-to-lightbulbs" (2) conglomerates in the world. And the question is what will happen to it?

Healthcare will stay for sure, but will the energy and industry divisions remain within the conglomerate?

Siemens Artis Hearing Aids - High Value, Low Cost

From the Phonophor which its founder Werner von Siemens invented in 1872 to its 2007 status as the US’ largest hearing aids manufacturer, Seimens Hearing Instruments has come a very long way.

Siemens collaborates with experts in every area of hearing impairment--medical clinics, university research facilities and audiologists--in designing its hearing devices, and them equips them with state of the art technology.

High End Features

Siemens has applied that research and technology to its Siemens Artis hearing aids, making them compare favorable with some of its high-end hearing devices while costing considerably less. The Siemens Artis hearing aid is remarkable for the speech clarity produced from its digital 12-channel noise control system.

With its speech enhancement feature, the Siemens Artis hearing aid removes annoying background sounds; its also manages feedback with a high-speed cancellation system, and is even capable of picking up and eliminating the sound of wind so that you can understand what is being said in outdoor situations.

With its TwinMac directional microphone, the Siemens Artis hearing aid allows you to position your microphones towards a speaker or sound source and away from surrounding noises. You’ll hear conversations and television or radio programs much more distinctly. And the behind-the-ear or customSiemens Artis hearing aids are equipped with their AutoPhone feature for optimizing their performance during telephone conversations.

The Siemens Artis hearing aid is protected from moisture, dust, and dirt with a specially- coated casing in a wide selection of colors, and can be closely matched to every complexion. E2E

Siemens Artis hearing aids even have an optional e2e feature for binaural users. E2e is an amazing breakthrough which allows the Seimens Artis hearing aids to work in tandem, with the aid in either ear adjusting automatically to maximize the quality your total hearing.

And, although the E2E Siemens Artis hearing aids will adjust automatically, they are equipped with manual controls which will allow you to adjust them simultaneously; all you need to do is volume or listening program control on one of the hearing aids; they will then synchronize their settings and eliminate the need for you to fine tune them separately.

And Siemens Artis hearing aids are smart; with their DataLearning feature they remember and adjust to their user’s preferred volume levels for each of their programs, and keep a record of data so that the user’s audiologist will be able to detect the need for further adjustments at follow-up sessions.
